Jairam Ramesh is the politician who said that politicians should retire after the age 65 and has great hopes from Rahul Gandhi.

Jairam Ramesh is the Indian Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Forests since May, 2009.
He is also a member of the National Advisory Council.

Ramesh attended St. Xavier's School, Ranchi in 1961-1963 in classes 3 to 5.
He graduated with a B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B)
Jairam spent his formative years at IIT Powai, where his father taught civil engineering.

He is a founding member of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad and is a member of the International Council of the New York-based Asia Society

He studied public management at Carnegie Mellon University during 1975-77.
He thereafter spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying technology policy, economics, engineering and management as part of the newly-established inter-disciplinary technology policy programme.
His undergraduate degree is in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai in 1975.
In 2001, IIT Mumbai presented him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

It was only after he finished his stint advising then United Front Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in 1998, that he joined the Congress party on a full-time basis.
He formally joined the Congress party with the blessings of both Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee.

Historian and writer Ramachandra Guha has described Ramesh as "a true environment minister".

1978 - Jairam Ramesh joined the World Bank

December 1979 - worked as assistant to economist Lovraj Kumar at the Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices.

1983 to 1985 - he was Officer on Special Duty in the Advisory Board of Energy.

1990- He worked as an "Officer on Special Duty" during the National Front administration of the V.P. Singh government.

1999–2003 - member of the Rajasthan Development Council

2000-2002 - Ramesh served as Deputy Chairman, State Planning Board, and Government of Karnataka and on the Economic Advisory Council of Andhra Pradesh.

2001–03 - Economic Advisor to the government of the state of Chhattisgarh

Aug. 2004 - Jan. 2006 - he was a member of three committees of Parliament: the Public Accounts Committee, the Standing Committee on Finance and the Committee on Government Assurances and was a member of the Court of the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Jairam Ramesh and Controversies –

•Ramesh shocked many including his own government when he said in China that the Home Ministry's policies towards Chinese companies looking to enter India were "alarmist" and "paranoid." Ramesh had to explain his stand to the PM and to Sonia Gandhi.

•Maheshwar Dam in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district. – In April end, the Ministry of Environment and Forest had suspended all work on the controversial dam for non compliance of environmental guidelines as well as on the grounds that the people displaced by the dam had not been rehabilitated.

•Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that a "determined effort" is on to finish off the tiger population in the country.

•"Our cities are the dirtiest cities of the world. If there is a Nobel Prize for dirt and filth, India will win it, no doubt," the Environment Minister said in November last year


•BT brinjal - Few people accuse him of or call him the agent of company Monsanto but this has not been proved.

•The Madhya Pradesh government then decided to reopen the gates of the pesticide factory of Union Carbide India Ltd in Bhopal to allow visitors. To bolster the point that the move was okay, Ramesh picked up a handful of soil at the factory and said that it was not hazardous. This had caused a major ripple among the people, and Ramesh later said that he regretted what he had said.

•Jairam Ramesh said that Vedanta would not be allowed to mine in the Niyamgiri Hills of the eastern Orissa state. "I have taken this decision purely on a legal approach – laws are being violated." This is first time happened in India that a big corporation was denied this has been done by Jairam Ramesh, who got guts to do something and say something not to wait for monsoon and future crops.

•Navi Mumbai Air port and Environment Ministry - problems are still going on and media is discussing the politicians and media is not bringing the reality of environment. Ramesh had made it clear that he had three main issues with the Navi Mumbai airport proposal: shifting of two river courses, removal of 400 acres of mangroves, and cutting down an 80-meter hillock.

•His criticism of Home Minister P. Chidamabaram for being tough on China's telecom operators did not go down well with the Congress party and even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pulled him up.

•Jairam Ramesh and SUV –
The luxurious growth of large-size vehicles like SUVs is really a growth of concern... use of vehicles like SUVs and BMW in countries like India is criminal," Ramesh said at a UN function
I think, we seriously need to think about fuel policy regime to discourage the use of such vehicles that emit more carbons.
We cannot ask people to buy or not to buy a particular car.
But through an effective fiscal policy, we can certainly have an impact And certainly put a penalty on the type of cars that you don't want to see on the roads which is diesel driven car, SUVs,"
