UK Politicians Parliament Votes in Favor of Gay Marriage first step legalizing Gay Marriage in UK passed

Currently in UK same-sex couples only have the option of a civil partnership, which offers the same legal rights and protections on issues such as inheritance, pensions, and child maintenance.

A bill to legalize same-sex marriage in Britain cleared a major hurdle on Tuesday, as politicians voted in favor of the proposal to legalize gay marriage in UK.

MPs voted in favor of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill by 400 to 175, a majority of 225.
But 136 Tory MPs opposed the bill.

MPs were given a free vote on the bill, meaning they were not ordered to vote a particular way by party whips.

The legislation will now receive more detailed parliamentary scrutiny.

The proposals also require the approval of the House of Lords before they become law.

If it becomes law, the bill will enable same-sex couples, who can currently engage in civil partnerships, to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies

British Prime Minister David Cameron said
He is proud that love between a same-sex couple will now "count the same" as a heterosexual couple.
He said, I am a strong believer in marriage. It helps people commit to each other and I think it is right that gay people should be able to get married too,"

"This is about equality. But it is also about making our society stronger."

If approved, the bill is expected to take effect in 2015 and enable same-sex couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies

The bill's provisions apply only to England and Wales - there are no plans for similar legislation in Northern Ireland.

Scotland is considering introducing a similar bill.

It is a good step by Prime Minister David Cameron who travels in local trains with common citizens of UK.
